Musicians, namely the drummer from Metallica, initially, and understandably began to stand behind their record label's attempts to crush this new scourge to their livelihoods. After all, even heavy metal drummers need to pay their therapists.

But, the smart artists, and the ones not so tainted by their management to see true artistic opportunity, began to revolt. Against all conventional wisdom, some of the biggest and most critically respected bands bit the hand that fed them for so many years. Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails (really just Trent Reznor) jumped ship, leaving the labels that released landmark albums like OK Computer and The Downward Spiral.

Even to a layperson, you can see that this is serious business, probably the most radical artistic upheaval our generation will experience. We aren't going to get to watch the rise of rock and roll, or hip hop coming out of the inner cities, but we are going to be able to witness first hand what happens when artists have the chance to be autonomous. The lunatics are taking over the asylum. Thom Yorke (of Radiohead) will have a more interesting business strategy then some uptight guy with an MBA that these artists used to have to pitch to just so they could get payola money for radio play.

Radiohead was the first band to really test the waters of what could be done free from the shackles of a major label. They released their latest album "In Rainbows" online and allowed fans to choose how much they think the music is worth. Think about that for a minute...it doesn't take long for a practical mind to come up with the million problems that this can cause for the business. What is profound about this is that Radiohead had enough faith in humanity to believe that people would actually choose to pay for something they could easily download for free; and everyone always takes Thom Yorke for a cynic. It's safe to assume that the labels didn't see this coming; they figured the bottom line to be cash.

The Radiohead experiment seems to have worked. Although they didn't make as much money as they probably would have releasing In Rainbows traditionally, they still made much more then most music journalists and industry people anticipated. People actually paid money, some paying more than the CD would have cost at a record store, to receive a product that was essentially free. People willingly made a donation to artists simply because they enjoyed their art.

The idea of people paying for music when they don't have to isn't revolutionary by itself, but removing the middle man is. The traditional wisdom is that a band needs a label to book tours and most importantly to market albums and shows through radio station payola and other media like magazine ads. The internet has not only allowed bands to release their music directly to their fans, but also to be directly involved with the marketing process. With the popularity of social networking sites like MySpace, bands are going straight to the fans, posting tours dates and even releasing exclusive songs. Tim Armstrong of the mid-90s punk band "Rancid" released an entire album for free on his website in 2006. After the initial popularity of his solo album, judged by the amount of downloads, he released it independently on his record label. "A Poet's Life" went on to be a moderate success in Armstrong's genre. People bought a CD full of music that they probably already had for free on their computer hard drives. This marketing strategy shows that fans are willing to support their favorite artists if the artists release quality music, and not just contract-quota filling albums for their labels.

Advancements in technology and the realization of the opportunities that the internet offers to musicians is a major threat to the labels that isn't going away. As more and more artists see the potential of being completely free of money-hungry management, it is a safe assumption that the quality of music being produced will rise. Bands will be judged solely on the quality of their music and tours instead of Billboard sales numbers. The fans will have the final say in the fate of bands, and many established acts are buying into this. "Queens of the Stone Age" will be the next band to leave their label, Interscope, according to front man and founder Josh Homme. They aren't the first to do it, but here's to hoping they aren't the last.

Several years ago movies were available on the internet via peer-to-peer file sharing sites. Of course, issues of piracy and the risk of exposure to viruses prevented the average consumer from considering movie downloads a viable option however. More legitimate movie downloads came along a bit later in the form of Movielink and CinemaNow, but the selection was limited, download technology was a bit slow, and the equipment in the homes of most consumers made watching the films undesirable. For these reasons, movie downloads for the most part remained the domain of early adopters rather than the mainstream public.

Online movie rental services such as Netflix and Blockbuster have been more prominent forces in the home entertainment industry due to their much larger selection of movies. The primary drawback for such movie rental services was the delay between choosing the movie and receiving it in the mail a day or two later for viewing. However, the distinction between movie downloads, with their immediate gratification and convenience, and the world of online movie rentals, with their vast libraries of movie and television show titles, became blurred in 2007; benefiting the movie watching public.

Due to upgrades in how online movie rental services deliver their product, movie downloads appear to be going mainstream. In January 2007, online movie rental pioneer, Netflix announced they would begin offering customers the option of streaming movies to their PC although the availability of titles would be phased in over time. Here is a free useful tutorial that explains a way to make high quality free ringtones from your free music downloads that you already have.

Let me start with a question here, do you have a Multi Giga Hard Drive with 50% full of your favorite music & songs? Well I guess you do since we are all starting to use our computers to store music. Then what about creating your cell phone ringtones from these?

Select your songs/music file, then try to find out for each one which part can be assigned as a nice ringtone, think of it this way "where is the best melody or music that can fit around 40 seconds ringtone?"

Editing Procedure as follows:
1. Click on the Play button and start playing the song till you reach the part where you ringtone should start.
2. Using the mouse curser, click & drag till your reach the ending part. "it will be selected and shaded in different color"
3. Play the selected part and refine your selection till you reach the best part.
4. Replay it again just to be 100% sure and its perfect for a ringtone.
5. Now move the mouse curser over the selected shaded area then click trim or crop. What will happen basically is all other unselected part of the song will erase and the only selected part will stay there.
6. Now the most important thing to do is to save the new file by selecting Save As and give a new name to the file (like myringtone1.mp3).
7. Be careful here not to over write over the original song, again you have to do SAVE AS and choose a new name in order to save the ringtone in another file not over the original song otherwise you will lose the song forever.
8. Now after you saved your ringtone on a new file called myringtone1.mp3 you can freely edit this ringtone without affecting the original song.
Side Note: if your cell phone is Sony Ericsson then jump to STEP No. 3 below to upload to your phone. Or try to find out some work here and download free ringtones on this site. 9. Now, limiting frequencies is what we need to do, so try to find something called equalizer or graphical equalizer within the software you're using in order cut down some high and low unwanted frequencies.
10. Below I'll show you a table of each frequency range & it's level of volume Reduction of Gain in db (decibel)

Cut down and boost frequency range as per the above table i.e. giving it a volume reduction and volume gain according to the db level given above. That could be done using a normal equalizer or graphical equalizer in any editor software.
Note that we're giving a high boost on the center frequencies where the vocalist sounds are centered and thus vocal sound will be more obvious when played as a ringtone.
11. Now once you're done with frequencies, play your work and try to edit volume levels till you reach the exact level you want then save the new file in a new folder lets call it [ringtones ready to upload].
Step No. 3 uploading to your cell phone.

Microsoft released Windows XP SP2 several years ago, yet still only a minority of software publishers digitally sign their products to enable Windows to verify the identity of the publisher. When someone downloads software that has not been signed, the web browser displays a message that the publisher could not be verified and the application may not be trusted.

Developers hope that users will dismiss these warnings with "OK". But this may be a false assumption as people become more security conscious. A software publishing certificate (or code signing certificate) may seem an undesirable expense but you only need to make a few extra sales of a product per year to justify it.

Code Signing Certificate
Code signing, or Authenticode, to use the name of Microsoft's implementation of it, is a technology based on standard cryptographic techniques. Two keys are generated. One key is used to encrypt information and the other must be used to decrypt it. The encrypting key is kept private, and is known as the private key. The decrypting key can be made public.

When a program or file is signed, the code signing tool generates a one-way hash of the file contents. This is a large number that is for all practical purposes unique to the file that generated it. This value is then encrypted using the private key and stored, together with the public key, in the file's digital certificate. When someone opens the file, their computer also generates a hash of the contents. At the same time, it decrypts the encrypted hash using the public key, and compares the results. If they are identical, the signature is valid and the file has not been modified since the signature was added.

Verifying integrity
Digital signatures provide the ability to prove the integrity of a file. In the case of software, this has the advantage that it can show that a file has not been infected by a virus since it was created. It would, of course, be possible for someone to infect a program with a virus and then sign it. Therefore an important additional function of Authenticode digital signing is that it can also verify who the software publisher is, and that it is a publisher that can be trusted.

To do this, digital signatures are counter-signed by a trusted certification authority, whose job it is to verify the integrity of the companies and individuals who apply for code signing certificates before they are issued. Windows will only trust certificates signed by one of three certification authorities: Verisign, Thawte and Comodo.

When you buy a code signing certificate, you are asked to provide documentary proof that you are who your certificate will show you to be. This prevents malicious inividuals from obtaining certificates that would enable them to claim their software came from Microsoft or any other reputable company.
Establishing trust

The manual checking needed to verify the identity of applicants is the reason why code signing certificates seem expensive. However, the cost is really a small price to pay for a measure that helps establish trust between you and your customers, and which will encourage more potential buyers to install your free trial products with confidence.

Broadband providers have warned the growing popularity of online video services, such as YouTube, Channel 4's OD service, and the newly introduced BBC iPlayer, may lead to an increase in prices for broadband in the forthcoming years. The main problems is the amount of bandwidth which broadband customers are using. Previously many broadband providers advertised their service as unlimited meaning that consumers could download as much as they wanted with no risk of their service being capped or of them being charged extra. Now in order to cope with the increase of bandwidth use broadband providers are capping downloads and slowing speeds down at peak times but fear that if the trend of increased downloading continues then higher prices will have to follow.

The use of video services requires more bandwidth in order to download both the video and audio content of a particular file. Services such as YouTube usually stream their content for videos often lasting only a few minutes. However, Channel 4's On Demand service and the BBC's iPlayer allow consumers to not only stream entire programmes, often lasting from between 30-60 minutes, but they also allow users to download programmes to their hard drive to be watched at a later date.

According to figures from Ofcom it could cost up to 830 million pounds to upgrade the network to cope with the so-called traffic jams expected to arise as a result of the video sites. And of course that extra cost will be passed onto the consumer so that broadband providers can continue to keep running and making profits.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Mary Turner, the Chief Executive of Tiscali UK said: "Peer to Peer traffic is the first to be affected at peak times making downloading slower but not limiting it with any caps. iPlayer traffic would fall into this category, although at present would not be specifically targeted. The internet was not set up with a view to distributing video. If the iPlayer really takes off, consumers accessing the internet will get very slow service."

The BBC responded by saying: "We are in regular discussions with the ISPs and together are monitoring the costs associated with video on demand. The delivery of TV programmes over the internet is still a very young service, and we can expect that everything from ISP service packages to consumer electronic equipment will evolve over the next few years."

iPhone Phone and E-Mail Tips

To stop an incoming call from ringing, press the sleep/wake button. To send the call immediately to voice mail, press the sleep/wake button twice.

An easy way to delete email is by just swiping left to right on the email in the list and press the delete button that pops up on the right side.

Caller ID Tips
If you select a photo for a contact from the iPhone, the selected photo is shown full screen for the caller ID. Neat!

If a contacts photo is transferred with the contact's info from the address book, the contact's photo is shown as a thumbnail for the caller ID.

Keystroke and Typing Tips
There is a simple way to go from the alpha to the non-alpha keyboard in one quick swipe. All you have to do is hold down the punctuation key and slide to the character you want to use and then release.

To use the CAPS LOCK feature, enable it in 'general settings.' To use it, double-tap on the shift key and the shift key will turn blue.

Google Maps Tips
Traveling somewhere and want to check out the surrounding area? Just type in the the 3 letter airport code while in maps and you will be taken to that airport on the map. So if you wanted to check out the Santa Monica pier on your trip to Los Angeles, type in 'LAX' (without quotes) while in maps and you will be taken to the Los Angeles International Airport. A quick zoom out will reveal Santa Monica and many other surrounding areas. This works with all major airports in the United States and many overseas airports as well.

Web Browsing with Safari
If you are at the bottom of a long web page and want to get back to the URL bar to go to another site, there is an easier way than scrolling all the way back to the top. Wherever you are on the page, tap the top of the screen where the time and battery life indicator are. You will be immediately taken to the URL entry field.

To email a page to someone, tap on the address bar. The Share button on the top left will create a message for you. Neat!
Simple 'page down.' Make sure you are not zoomed-in. Now double-tap towards the bottom of the screen and the page will re-center around your tap. Make sure not to tap a link!
Zoom onto a specific picture. Double-tapping images in Safari zooms them to fit your iPhone display. If the picture is linked to a URL, you may not want to do this as you will be taken to the page linked from the image. Double-tap again to return to the unzoomed display.
Zoom onto a text column. This works in a similar fashion as pictures. Double-tap on the column to fit it to the display. Double-tap again to return out of the zoom. Not only does Safari zoom block-quoted text independently of regular text but if you move your finger after the first double-tap-to-fit, it interprets the next double-tap as a re-center page command rather than a return-to-previous-zoom. Very handy.

You've probably noticed the odd format of iTunes music, m4p. This is a protected format and it will only work on iTunes software and on iPod players. The standard format for digital music is mp3 which will work on just about any software or mp3 player. So, why did Apple decide to make their music unusable on other software?

It's called DRM (digital rights management) and the reason for it is to keep you from copying and giving out music that you've downloaded from iTunes. Apple says that it's all about better sound quality, but m4p has the same sound quality as any other digital music. They just needed a way to stop the free-loaders.

So what's the problem? While I do believe music piracy should be stopped, it seems unfair that I can't use my legally purchased music how I want to use it. For those of us who can't afford an iPod (I have a sony mp3 player, much cheaper) it becomes inhibiting because we can't take our music on the go. Itunes software doesn't provide any means of converting from m4p to mp3.
Is there a way around this problem? There are a few ways actually:

Method 1: Burn the tracks to a CD, then open the CD in iTunes and right-click on a song. A Convert Selection option will appear.
This option only works if you have burned the songs to a CD first though. If you try this without burning to a CD first it will give you an error message saying you can't convert protected files to another format.
This methods gives you 2 copies of a song in your playlist -- one in the original protected format and one in MP3. This is somewhat annoying and if you want to convert a lot of music you'll have to burn tons of CD's and waste a lot of time.

Method 2: There is software that can convert the files to mp3 for you. I recommend using Tunebite but there are others if you look around. This is a lot quicker and easier than burning a whole stack of CD's.
